Stars zallen Queen mit Konzert Tribut
Mit einem bombastischen Konzert vor dem Buckingham-Palast und vielen Danksagungen ist der dritte Tag der Feierlichkeiten zum 70. Thronjubiläum von Queen Elizabeth am Samstag zu Ende gegangen. 22.000 Zuschauer folgten Stars wie Rod Stewart, Diana Ross, Andrea Bocelli und Alicia Keys. 30 Mitglieder der Royal Family waren ebenfalls anwesend, nicht aber die Queen selbst. Sie war dennoch der Star des Abends.
Die Queen eröffnete das Konzert in einem Video mit Paddington Bär. Bei einem Tee mit der beliebten Filmfigur unterhielt sie sich mit Paddington über Marmeladebrote für „Notfälle“. „Danke für alles“, sagte Paddington Bär zum Schluss. Dann eröffnete die Rockband Queen mit Sänger Adam Lambert die Show mit ihren Hits „We Will Rock You“ und „We Are the Champions“.
Musik-Acts wechselten sich mit Grußbotschaften etwa von Ex-Fußballer David Beckham, der ehemaligen First Lady Michelle Obama und der Schauspielerin Judy Dench ab. Elton John wurde für seinen Auftritt ebenfalls per Video zugeschaltet. Auf der Ehrentribüne versammelte sich viel royale Prominenz – unter ihnen Thronfolger Prinz Charles und sein ältester Sohn, Prinz William.
„Eure Majestät, Mami“
Unter Jubel traten Prinz Charles und Camilla auf: „Eure Majestät, Mami“, begrüßte er die Queen in seiner emotionalen Rede: „Dieses Fest ist unsere Art, dir Danke zu sagen. Ich möchte dir meinen persönlichen Dank sagen für deinen persönlichen Dienst an unserem Volk.“ Sie sei nicht nur eine Königin, sondern auch eine Mutter. Sie habe mit ihnen gelacht und geweint und sei immer da gewesen, so Prinz Charles feierlich. „Ihr habt versprochen, Euer ganzes Leben lang zu dienen, und Ihr liefert weiterhin. Deshalb sind wir hier. Das ist, warum wir heute Abend feiern. Deshalb, Eure Majestät, sagen wir Danke.“
Während der Rede wurden Bilder der Queen aus den Jahren ihrer Regentschaft an die Fassade des Stadtschlosses projiziert, die Charles nach Angaben seiner Residenz selbst ausgewählt hatte. Zu sehen war unter anderem die Übergabe des Fußballweltmeisterpokals 1966 an die englische Nationalmannschaft. Zuvor hatte schon sein Sohn Prinz William die Worte an das Publikum gerichtet und die Arbeit seiner Großeltern gewürdigt.
Williams Bruder Harry und seine Frau Meghan, die anlässlich des Thronjubiläums aus den USA nach London gereist sind, waren nicht beim Konzert. Ihr zweites Kind Lilibet hatte am Samstag Geburtstag. Die Queen selbst schaute sich das Spektakel zu ihren Ehren auf Schloss Windsor im Fernsehen an. Am Freitag hatte Elizabeth II. bereits beim großen Dankgottesdienst in der Londoner Saint-Paul-Kathedrale wegen „Unwohlseins“ gefehlt. Auch ihren für Samstag geplanten Besuch des traditionsreichen Pferderennens in Epsom sagte die 96-Jährige aus gesundheitlichen Gründen ab. Vertreten wurde sie von ihrer Tochter Prinzessin Anne (71).
70.000 Gastgeber richten Picknicks aus
Am Sonntag enden die viertägigen Feierlichkeiten zu Ehren der Queen mit Festessen unter freiem Himmel. Millionen Gäste werden zu den von mehr als 70.000 Gastgebern ausgerichteten Picknicks erwartet. Höhepunkt des Tages ist dann ein großer Festumzug im Zentrum von London, der zum Buckingham-Palast führt.
Musiker, Artisten, Tänzer und Schauspieler stellen die zahlreichen historischen Veränderungen dar, die sich seit der Thronbesteigung von Elizabeth II. im Jahr 1952 ereignet haben. Am Ende der Parade wird vor dem Palast, angeführt von Popstar Ed Sheeran, die Nationalhymne „God Save the Queen“ gesungen.
Australien geht auf Distanz
Nicht alle preisen mit dem Jubiläum die Monarchie. In Australien etwa nimmt man das Jubiläum zum Anlass, auf Distanz zur Rekordmonarchin zu gehen. Nach dem Ende von Elizabeths Regentschaft sei die Zeit für eine ernsthafte Debatte gekommen, heißt es aus der neuen Regierung.
Die Queen ist wie in vielen anderen Mitgliedsstaaten des Commonwealth formal Staatsoberhaupt Australiens. Das 70. Thronjubiläum der Königin sei ein Anlass, über die Zukunft der früheren britischen Kolonie nachzudenken, sagte Kabinettsmitglied Matt Thistlethwaite der britischen Nachrichtenagentur PA. „Australien ist ein unabhängiger Staat. Wir haben unsere eigene einzigartige Identität und Kultur“, sagte Thistlethwaite. Alle Australierinnen und Australier müssten die Möglichkeit haben, Staatsoberhaupt zu werden.
Spekulationen über neues Referendum
Thistlethwaites Ernennung zum „Assistant Minister for the Republic“ hatte Vermutungen geschürt, dass der neue Premierminister Anthony Albanese von der Labor-Partei ein Referendum zu dieser Frage anstrebt. 1999 hatte bei einer Volksabstimmung eine Mehrheit (55 Prozent) der Australierinnen und Australier für die Beibehaltung der Monarchie gestimmt.
„Meine Aufgabe ist in der frühen Phase eine Art der Bildung – den Leuten zu erklären, dass wir eine fremde Monarchin als Staatsoberhaupt haben, dass wir mit dem Generalgouverneur einen stellvertretenden Repräsentanten haben, aber dass wir einen Australier als Staatsoberhaupt haben könnten“, sagte Thistlethwaite. Bis zu einem Referendum dürfte es allerdings noch ein weiter Weg sein. Berichten zufolge plant die Labor-Regierung eine solche Abstimmung erst im Falle einer Wiederwahl.

A bombastic concert outside Buckingham Palace and many tributes marked the end of the third day of Queen Elizabeth’s 70th throne anniversary celebrations on Saturday. 22,000 spectators followed stars such as Rod Stewart, Diana Ross, Andrea Bocelli and Alicia Keys. 30 members of the Royal Family were also in attendance, but not the Queen herself. She was nevertheless the star of the evening.
The Queen opened the concert in a video with Paddington Bear. Over tea with the popular movie character, she chatted with Paddington about jam sandwiches for «emergencies.» «Thank you for everything,» Paddington Bear said at the end. Then the rock band Queen with singer Adam Lambert opened the show with their hits «We Will Rock You» and «We Are the Champions.»
Musical acts alternated with greetings from the likes of ex-footballer David Beckham, former First Lady Michelle Obama and actress Judy Dench. Elton John was also videoed in for his performance. A host of royal VIPs gathered in the VIP stand – including heir to the throne Prince Charles and his eldest son, Prince William.

«Your Majesty, Mummy»
Prince Charles and Camilla performed to cheers. «Your Majesty, Mummy,» he greeted the Queen in his emotional speech. «This celebration is our way of saying thank you. I want to say my personal thanks to you for your personal service to our people.» He said she was not only a queen, but also a mother. She laughed and cried with them and was always there, Prince Charles said solemnly. «You promised to serve all your life, and you continue to deliver. That is why we are here. That is why we celebrate tonight. That, Your Majesty, is why we say thank you.»
During the speech, images of the Queen from the years of her reign were projected onto the facade of the City Palace, which Charles himself had chosen, according to his residence. Their second child Lilibet had a birthday on Saturday. The Queen herself watched the spectacle in her honor at Windsor Castle on television. On Friday, Elizabeth II had already been absent from the great thanksgiving service in London’s Saint Paul’s Cathedral due to «indisposition.» The 96-year-old also canceled her planned visit to the traditional horse race in Epsom on Saturday for health reasons. She was represented by her daughter Princess Anne (71).

Australia keeps its distance
Not everyone praises the monarchy with the anniversary. In Australia, for example, the jubilee is being used as an opportunity to distance oneself from the record-breaking monarch. After the end of Elizabeth’s reign, the time has come for a serious debate, according to the new government.
The Queen is formally Australia’s head of state, as she is in many other Commonwealth member states. The queen’s 70th anniversary on the throne is an occasion to reflect on the future of the former British colony, Cabinet member Matt Thistlethwaite told the British news agency PA. «Australia is an independent country. We have our own unique identity and culture,» Thistlethwaite said. All Australians should have the opportunity to become heads of state, he added.
Speculation about new referendum
Thistlethwaite’s appointment as «assistant minister for the republic» had fueled speculation that new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of the Labor Party would seek a referendum on the issue. In 1999, a majority (55 percent) of Australians had voted to retain the monarchy in a referendum.
«My job in the early stages is sort of to educate – to explain to people that we have a foreign monarch as head of state, that we have a deputy representative in the form of the governor general, but that we could have an Australian as head of state,» Thistlethwaite said. However, there is likely to be a long way to go before a referendum is held. According to reports, the Labor government is not planning such a vote until it is re-elected.
