The European Union is preparing more sanctions against Russia.
«We are working on a sixth sanctions package, and one of the issues we are considering is some form of oil embargo. When we impose sanctions, we need to do so in a way that maximizes pressure on Russia while minimizing collateral damage to ourselves,» Valdis Dombrovskis, vice president of the EU Commission, told the British newspaper The Times.
However, EU foreign affairs envoy Josep Borrell does not currently see sufficient support among member states for an embargo on Russian oil and gas. He said this also applies to alternative sanctions such as a punitive tariff on Russian oil and gas supplies. Borrell said this to the German daily newspaper Die Welt.
While he believes an import ban on oil and gas or a punitive tariff would be important to build pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and bring him to the negotiating table. «But at the moment we don’t have a united stance in the EU on this issue.»
