The G-20 meeting of finance ministers and central bank chiefs from the leading industrialized and emerging economies was overshadowed yesterday by the Russian attack on Ukraine. When Russia spoke out at the meeting, many participants left the room, tweeted ECB President Christine Lagarde, who was in Washington to attend the meeting.
Representatives of the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada were among them, a government spokesman in London said. The diplomatic tensions underscore how divided the G-20 is at the moment. A final declaration, which usually lists common goals, had already been ruled out in advance.
IMF chief: difficult moment
Kristalina Georgieva, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), spoke of a difficult moment for the G-20, which has played an important role in recent years in responding to the global financial crisis and, most recently, the coronavirus pandemic. But cooperation must continue, he said.
Some G-20 countries are calling for Russia’s exclusion. This year’s G-20 host, Indonesia, however, did not want to exclude Russia, allowing virtual participation, including by Finance Minister Anton Siluanov.
According to Russian news agency RIA, he urged G-20 countries not to politicize dialogue in the circle. This could undermine trust in the global financial system.
