NEOS will Van der Bellen unterstützen.

HOFBURG ELECTION AUSTRIA

Few challengers for Van der Bellen

It is now clear that Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen wants to run again for the highest office in the state. However, the field of candidates for him could be quite thin. Of the parliamentary parties, only the FPÖ wants to enter the race again, and a few independent candidates are also emerging. But also here one gives oneself still wait-and-see.

SPÖ and ÖVP had already communicated in recent months that they did not want to put up anyone in the event of a candidacy of Van der Bellen himself. The SPÖ then finally assured Van der Bellen of its support immediately on Sunday. The president had carried out his office “responsibly and well. He has my support,” said SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner.

The ÖVP did not want to commit itself right away. On Sunday, it referred to consultations, but on Monday, Chancellor and party leader Karl Nehammer officially rejected an ÖVP candidacy: the party had “decided not to put forward its own candidate for the presidential election, but it will also not make any election recommendations. People are of age and can make their own decision.”

At the same time, however, the ÖVP wishes Van der Bellen “all the best” for his candidacy. Individual ÖVP officials, however, already explicitly backed Van der Bellen, including Tyrolean Governor Günther Platter.

NEOS wants to support Van der Bellen. “As in the second round of elections six years ago, we NEOS will support him in his candidacy,” NEOS Secretary General Douglas Hoyos said on Monday. Admittedly, the Greens are also not putting up a counter-candidate against their former party leader, instead Van der Bellen was praised by Green Party leader Werner Kogler as an “anchor of stability.”

Only FPÖ with candidacy plans

The parties are also likely to have the dramatic 2016 election in mind when making their decision. At that time, a record number of six candidates had run, more than at any time since 1951. For the SPÖ and ÖVP, the election had ended in a debacle, with their candidates Rudolf Hundstorfer and Andreas Khol not even reaching the second round.

That election was a close race between Van der Bellen and the FPÖ candidate Norbert Hofer – and the party is obviously hoping for such a race again: it wants to be the only parliamentary party to put forward a candidate. Hofer himself, however, has already waved it off: “I think it would be smart for me and smart for the FPÖ and smart for the country if I skip this round and win the next one,” he told oe24 TV.

2016 saw a runoff election between Hofer and Van der Bellen
Therefore, according to the Tyrolean FPÖ regional party chairman Markus Abwerzger, they will now start looking for candidates and will already discuss more intensively at the beginning of June. The decision or presentation will take place however only in the summer, said Abwerzger to the APA. Last circulated repeatedly the name Susanne Fürst. The 53-year-old deputy FPÖ club leader and member of the National Council would be “like some others a good candidate,” Abwerzger said.

Repeatedly there were also speculations that FPÖ club leader Herbert Kickl himself could run. In any case, the FPÖ described the fact that the other parliamentary parties are not putting up candidates as a “political declaration of bankruptcy.”

MFG considers several party-less candidates

It can be assumed that the FPÖ will place its opposition to the pandemic policy and Van der Bellen’s support of the same at the center of its election campaign. Here, however, the Freedom Party may not be alone. Also the vaccine-critical party MFG wants to decide in the summer on a possible candidate for the election, so federal managing director Gerhard Pöttler in a dispatch. In any case, his party is “dissatisfied” with Van der Bellen’s conduct in office, because he has in fact given his blessing to all pandemic laws.

Apart from that, other non-party candidacies are emerging. As relatively probably it is considered that the former BZÖ politician Gerald Grosz could try it. For the repeated time probably also Robert Marschall and Martin Wabl, which failed in former times already at the hurdle of 6.000 signatures, to start.

A candidacy announced also the physician, musician and beer party founder Dominik Wlazny, probably better admits as Marco Pogo. Also it considers however still. Konstantin Haslauer, Rudolf Remigius Kleinschnitz, Thomas Schaurecker, Johann Peter Schutte and Hubert Thurnhofer are also campaigning for support.
